Try, Try Again?

You are the parent of six-year-old Joey. Ever since he was a toddler, Joey has loved music in all ways: singing , listening to the radio, making up his own tunes and moving to music he hears. Neither you nor your spouse has any musical background, but you want to nurture Joey’s musical side. Music lessons seem like a logical step and Joey is excited about the idea! But how do you go about finding lessons that will be right for him?

After speaking to a friend whose daughter is doing well with her violin lessons, you sign Joey up with her teacher. But after just a few months Joey's lack of interest is apparent. It's almost impossible to get him to practice, and on lesson day he will say, “I don't want to go. Do I have to?” You discuss this as a family and ask Joey if there’s a different instrument he thinks he would prefer to study. He doesn't seem sure, but says that since he loves listening to jazz trumpet he might like to learn it. You check out music lessons online and find a trumpet teacher with great reviews right in your neighborhood. The teacher knows his stuff and Joey really likes him. But once Joey actually starts the process of learning it, he decides he’d rather listen to a trumpet than play one.

After two failed attempts…

What would you do?
