Meryl Danziger, Founder of music house

Meryl Danziger is the Founder and Director of Music House. Following a long career as a violinist in orchestras around the world, Meryl saw a need to offer a humane approach to music lessons that would help children and adult learners forge a personal, sustainable connection to music making. This calling led to a Masters in Music from Goddard college, and the creation of Music House in 2000.

Meryl’s career has reached into every corner of music from performance to education to writing. Her presentation at the 2019 Carnegie Hall Summer Music Teachers Institute, "Dynamics to Fabric Softener: Easing the Way to Musical Ownership," explored a cornerstone of the Music House approach: teaching through relatable imagery. Her book Sing It! A Biography of Pete Seeger (2016, Seven Stories Press), the first bio of Pete for young readers, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, and was featured at the Old Town School of Folk Music Pete Seeger Centennial celebration. Several of Meryl’s city blogs have appeared in the New York Times “Metropolitan Diary.” A published songwriter, her original songs, stories and plays are regularly performed by children of all ages. Her articles on education and music education have appeared in NEA Today as well as in Homeschooling journals nationwide. Meryl’s Music House approach has been the subject of two documentaries and her book, Music House: Liberating the Music Lesson, will be available shortly.

Formerly Chairman of the Music Department at the Little Red School House in NYC, Meryl now devotes her time to Music House through speaking engagements, writing articles and blogs, and helping children and adults discover and nurture their “Inner Musician.”

MUSIC HouSe: redefining music learning

Music House is a highly individualized, holistic alternative to traditional music lessons. This one of a kind approach is based on the belief that every one of us has some type and degree of musical inclination, that musical inclination can take different forms, and that there are many ways to connect to music making. By broadening the definition of music learning to include a variety of musical activities and experiences, Music House advocates for the right of every individual to discover and nurture her own “Inner Musician,” and to forge lifelong, personal musical connections.

The Music House approach is based on the following principles:

  • All of us are born with some type of musical potential.

  • Everyone is inclined to be musical in a different way.

  • There are many forms that musical involvement can take.

When the individual has the opportunity to explore a variety of musical stimuli at her own pace, in her own way and in keeping with her own interest and readiness, her musical inclinations will be revealed.
